Performing Umrah is a spiritual pilgrimage to Mecca, which, unlike Hajj, can be performed at any time of the year. It involves several rites and rituals that hold significant spiritual value. Below is a detailed step-by-step guide on how to perform Umrah:

Preparation for Umrah

  1. Obtain Necessary Documentation:

    • Ensure you have a valid passport, a visa for Saudi Arabia (Umrah visa), and any required travel documentation.
  2. Physical and Financial Preparation:

    • Ensure you are in good health and physically capable of performing the rites.
    • Save money for the journey, accommodation, food, and any expenses related to your trip.
  3. Learn the Rituals:

    • Understand the key rites of Umrah: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Tahallul.
    • Familiarize yourself with the supplications (duas) that will be recited during these rites.
  4. Pack Essentials:

    • Ihram clothing: Men wear two white, seamless pieces of cloth, while women wear simple, modest clothing that covers the entire body.
    • Pack other personal items, including toiletries, medications, Quran, prayer mat, and any other essentials.

Steps of Performing Umrah

1. Entering the State of Ihram

  • Ihram is a state of spiritual purity, which must be entered before reaching the Miqat (the designated place where one is required to put on Ihram).
    • For Men: Wear two white, unstitched garments – one covering the lower body and the other covering the upper body.
    • For Women: Wear simple, modest clothing that covers the entire body except for the face and hands.
  • Make the Intention (Niyyah):
    • When you are in the Miqat (a boundary area), declare your intention for Umrah by saying:
      • “Labbayk Allahumma Umrah” (Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah).
    • Recite the Talbiyah:
      • “Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la sharika laka labbayk, innal hamda wal ni’mata laka wal mulk, la sharika lak.”
      • This is a declaration of your presence before Allah.

2. Entering Mecca and Preparing for Tawaf

  • Once you arrive in Mecca, head towards the Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) to perform Tawaf.
    • Enter the mosque with your right foot first and make du’a (supplications).
    • Perform Ghusl (ritual washing) before entering if possible.

3. Performing Tawaf (Circumambulating the Kaaba)

  • Tawaf involves walking around the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction, starting from the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).
    • Begin at the Black Stone: As you stand facing the Kaaba, recite “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar” before starting each circuit.
    • Each Tawaf circuit should be performed around the Kaaba in a counterclockwise motion.
    • During Tawaf, recite prayers, supplications, or any personal du’as. Some people may say the words “SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar” during the Tawaf.
    • Try to get as close to the Kaaba as possible, but avoid pushing others. If you can reach the Black Stone, touch it; if not, simply gesture towards it as you pass.

4. Praying Two Rak’ahs (Salah) After Tawaf

  • After completing the Tawaf, proceed to the Maqam Ibrahim (the station of Prophet Ibrahim) and offer two rak’ahs of prayer.
    • It is recommended to pray near Maqam Ibrahim, but if the area is crowded, you can pray anywhere within the mosque.
    • After the two rak’ahs, it is encouraged to make du’a (supplication).

5. Performing Sa’i (Walking Between Safa and Marwah)

  • After Tawaf, head to the Safa and Marwah hills, located inside the mosque, to perform Sa’i (the walking between the two hills).
    • Start at Safa: Stand at the Safa hill, face the Kaaba, and make a supplication (du’a) as you begin. Then, walk towards Marwah, which is approximately 400 meters away.
    • Walk from Safa to Marwah (this is one round). Repeat this walking seven times, ending at Marwah (total of seven circuits, with each circuit consisting of a walk from one hill to the other).
    • Women should walk normally between the two hills, while men are encouraged to run between the two markers.
    • At each end (Safa and Marwah), make du’a before continuing.

6. Shaving or Trimming Hair (Tahallul)

  • After completing the Sa’i, men should shave their heads (Taqseer) or trim their hair. Shaving is preferable, but trimming is acceptable if shaving is difficult.
    • For Women: Women should trim a small portion of their hair (usually a fingertip’s length).
    • This act symbolizes spiritual renewal and humility.

7. Ending the State of Ihram

  • After the Tahallul (shaving or trimming), you have completed the rites of Umrah, and you can now exit the state of Ihram. You may now resume regular activities, such as wearing normal clothes and engaging in any activities that were prohibited during Ihram (e.g., using perfume, cutting nails).

Optional Rituals in Mecca

  • Tawaf al-Ifadah: Though Tawaf al-Ifadah is required during Hajj, some people perform this ritual as an additional act of devotion during Umrah.
  • Visiting the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina: If you are able to travel to Medina after performing Umrah, it is highly recommended to visit the Prophet’s Mosque and offer prayers there. It is believed that prayers offered here are greatly rewarded.

Important Notes:

  • Ihram Restrictions: While in the state of Ihram, there are several things that are prohibited, such as:
    • Engaging in intimate relations
    • Wearing perfume
    • Cutting hair or nails
    • Hunting animals
    • Engaging in arguments or disputes
    • Wearing stitched clothing (for men)
  • Tawaf and Sa’i: The Tawaf and Sa’i rituals can be performed anytime during your visit to Mecca. However, it’s highly encouraged to do them at the start of your trip.
  • Recite Du’a: Throughout your journey, make du’a and reflect on your spiritual goals. You can make personal supplications during Tawaf, Sa’i, and in other moments of worship.

After Performing Umrah

  • Make Dua (Supplication): After completing Umrah, take time to reflect and make sincere supplications to Allah. Pray for yourself, your family, and the entire Muslim Ummah.
  • Visit Holy Sites: If you are in Mecca, visit Jannat al-Mu’alla (the cemetery where many early Muslims, including the Prophet’s family, are buried) and other sacred sites.

Summary of the Steps:

  1. Enter Ihram and make the intention for Umrah.
  2. Travel to Mecca and enter Masjid al-Haram.
  3. Perform Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Kaaba.
  4. Pray two rak’ahs near Maqam Ibrahim.
  5. Perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah.
